A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens that gradually blurs vision. Cataract surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear, permanent intraocular lens - one of the most commonly performed and effective procedures in modern medicine.

Cataracts develop gradually, most commonly with age, and often affect both eyes over time. Common signs include blurred or hazy vision, increased glare from headlights or sunlight, faded colours, and difficulty reading or driving at night.
Mr Sultan assesses the density and position of the cataract, your overall eye health, and how your vision affects the activities that matter to you, before recommending whether and when surgery is appropriate.
Lens Options
A range of intraocular lens (IOL) options are available, from standard monofocal lenses that give excellent vision at one distance, to premium options designed to reduce dependence on glasses for near, intermediate or distance vision. Mr Sultan discusses which option best matches your eyes, your other eye conditions and your visual priorities.
Your Journey - In Sequence
A detailed eye examination and biometry measurements to plan your surgery and select the most suitable lens. Any other eye conditions are reviewed at this stage.
Performed under local anaesthetic as day surgery, typically taking around 15–30 minutes per eye. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. If you're feeling anxious, oral sedation can be offered where clinically suitable, alongside the local anaesthetic.
Vision often improves within days, though full settling can take several weeks. Eye drops are used for a short period to support healing and reduce infection risk.
A follow-up appointment confirms healing and visual outcome, with the second eye - if needed - usually scheduled a few weeks later.

Frequently Asked
Most patients experience little to no pain. The eye is numbed with local anaesthetic drops or a small injection, and some patients also opt for light sedation.
Many patients notice improved vision within a few days, with most normal activities resumed within a week. Full stabilisation of vision can take up to four to six weeks.
This depends on the lens chosen and your eyes. Standard monofocal lenses usually still require glasses for some tasks, while premium lenses aim to reduce that dependence. This is discussed in detail during your consultation. No guarantee can ever be given for refractive outcomes.
Cataract surgery is generally very safe, though as with any surgery there are risks including infection, inflammation, need for further treatment and loss of vision. Mr Sultan will talk through your individual risk profile during assessment.
